What is Staff Development?
Staff development is any program or activity designed to influence the professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes of educational personnel to enhance student learning, achievement and safety.

What is the District’s Role in Staff Development?
The District should insure that the staff development plan includes ongoing staff development activities that contribute towards continuous improvement in achievement of the following Legislative outcomes: (M.S. 122A.60 Subd.3)
- Improve student achievement of state and local education standards in all areas of the curriculum by using best practice methods
- Effectively meet the needs of a diverse student population, including at-risk children, children with disabilities, and gifted children, within the regular classroom and other settings
- Provide an inclusive curriculum for a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse student population that is consistent with the state education diversity rules and the district’s education diversity plan
- Improve staff collaboration and develop mentoring and peer coaching programs for teachers new to the school or district
- Effectively teach and model violence prevention policy and curriculum that address early intervention alternatives, issues of harassment, and teach nonviolent alternatives for conflict resolution
- Provide teachers and other members of site-based management teams with appropriate management and financial management skills.
What is Your Role in Staff Development?
Staff development is a continuous process. It should empower individual educators and communities of educators to become clear about their priority to increase student learning, achievement and safety. There are three forms in which school district personnel can obtain staff development. The three areas are:
- District Staff Development allows for the district as a whole to complete staff development activities.
- Site-Based Staff Development in which staff/faculty can obtain monies from their site to support individual and site staff development opportunities.
Your Responsibilities in Using Staff Development Dollars
- Complete necessary staff development forms in a timely manner. See site for proper forms and directions.
- Choose appropriate staff development activities that will positively impact student learning and safety.
- Share new information with colleagues.
- Apply staff development learning activities to student learning, achievement, and safety.
Who Can Access Staff Development Dollars?
Any school district personnel can access staff development dollars as long as the activity correlates with improving student achievement and safety.
What are the Criteria for Accessing Staff Development Dollars?
Request must meet one or more of the following:
- Focus on improving student achievement and safety.
- Meet the needs of a diverse student population.
- Provide an inclusive curriculum.
- Improve staff collaboration.
- Develop mentoring and peer programs.
- Teach and model violence prevention policy and curriculum.
- Provide site-based teams with management and financial skill training.
- Relate to site and district goals.

What is the role of the District Staff Development Committee?
The district committee will coordinate staff development activities to help staff enhance student learning, achievement and safety.
Who are the District Staff Development Committee?
The District Staff Development team will consist of three teachers, one administrator and one non-certified member from each of the two site teams, plus the superintendent and a school board representative.
What are the District Staff Development Committee’s responsibilities?
- Develop the district staff development plan based on local school board goals and legislative mandates
- Receive and distribute staff development opportunities to staff members
- Assist site staff development committees in developing site plans
- Inform the school board of staff development activities once a year by the school board representative
- Develop and prioritize short and long term goals for staff development
- Annually review and evaluate the staff development plan
- Prepare and complete the state Staff Development Annual Report
How does the District Staff Development Committee operate?
- The district staff development committee will meet twice a year and will have additional meetings when
deemed appropriate. - The chairperson and secretary will be elected from the district staff development committee.
- The chairperson will prepare the agenda for each meeting.
- The secretary will record and distribute the minutes of each meeting.
- The committee members will report back to their respective sites/groups.

- To provide opportunities for staff that will promote curriculum improvements.
- To provide training for staff that will enable them to understand and implement continuous improvement practices and strategies.
- To provide opportunities for training staff to evaluate educational programs and practices for effectiveness and student academic results.
- To provide the opportunities for staff to increase the effective use of technology as a learning and teaching tool.
